Balled and burlapped (B&B): The leaves are large, of good color, and free from spots or dead areas. The stems do not show signs of recent heavy pruning. Stem diameter is in good proportion to the size of the plant. The roots do not encircle the base of the trunk, and the rootball inside the burlap is not broken or very dry.
Bare root: The trunk is a good diameter for the size of the plant. The stem is flexible and the bark is not broken or dried. The roots are symmetrical and flexible. The buds and roots are still dormant, with no new growth evident.
Containerized: The leaves are large, of good color, and free from spots or dead areas. The stems do not show signs of recent heavy pruning. The stem diameter is in proportion with the size of the plant. The roots do not encircle the base of the trunk, and the plant is firmly rooted. When the plant is removed from the container, many roots are visible on the outside of the rootball, but they are not thick or woody.
Flats or small pots: Plants are young and stocky, without dead or discolored leaves. No plants should be missing from the flat.
Sod:The grass is a good green color without yellow blades. The soil is about ¾ inch thick, and moist. The sod holds together when handled.
Bulbs: The bulbs are firm without wounds, or soft or deep blemishes. They are not moldy or dried, and the basal plate is firm and not cracked. The skins may be loose.
